CommentaryA portrait of the actor Arashi Ryūzō (better known as Arashi Shichigorō III, 1761-1798/XI/5, acted as Ryūzō until XI/1797), depicted full-length against a grey ground. Most likely, he is here portrayed in the role of Etchū no Jirōbei, one of his success roles in the play Yasa’s Tactics in the Battle Array for the Capital (Yasa gunbai Miyako no jindori), staged at the Miyako Theatre in XI/1793. The name of the actor is a manuscript addition.
Apparently an otherwise unrecorded print.
Signed Shunei, published by Iwatoya Kisaburō, 1793.
